In herbology class yesterday, the great Dr. Pai was discussing how people get frustrated and put a smile on their face. They hold it in, creating internal pathology as movement stagnates.
I’ve seen many patients the last few weeks that were like pressure cookers. They put on a brave face, but they create internal pain by not venting the pressure. I find this pattern consistent with every patient that perceives pain.
Most people don’t explode and vent in my office. I’m not promoting people take their damage out on me. But, I hope I provide a comfortable environment where they don’t have to hide. They can admit they are frustrated, or scared, or tired, or angry.
Once patients can admit their attitude’s role in the pain, they can take more control over the pain they perceive.
Attitude matters.
I’ve observed people get shocked when they find out I am not happy-go-luvky all the time. I experience frustration, and anger, and agitation.
I just don’t let it brew, and I do my best not to take it out on other people. But I used to do it, especially with people I cared about the most. But I have been making strides on dealing with my struggles and enjoying the process, rather than fight with my frustrations and make them worse.
Got frustrations? You don’t have to hold it all inside. Please deal with them. I’d write you are better off in the long run, but tomorrow doesn’t exist anyway. This is about right now. Deal with your issues so you can feel better RIGHT NOW.
