Dooley’s 2020 Getup Challenge:
Day 1 of 365 days of Getups
Daily total requirement: 1 minimum
Total completed: 10 (bodyweight, 5 each side)
Yearly total: 10
Much like I did with the swing in 2018, I’ve made a 2020 getup goal.
I will attempt – and do the best in me to complete – a minimum numbers of getups for the day of the year that is in front of me.
Day 1 = 1 minimum that day, Day 365 = 365 minimum that day
This makes for a unique challenge of which I’ve never endured.
The goal is the minimum, with no set maximum, per day. It starts easy – and it grows in intensity with the volume as the days collect. They can be bodyweight or loaded.
I have performed and taught the getup for many years now, and it is a crucial assessment with full body diagnostic capabilities.
I want to learn more about load-sharing, my own objectivity in my subjective experience.
I also want to see if this level of commitment can take me to places I’ve never reached – like the 36 or 40 kilo kettlebell getup. (My maximum has been a 34 kilo getup).
Maybe it just keeps me moving on subway platforms or in airports.
But I care less about the load and more about the LOAD SHARE. Can I stay injury free while committing to this exercise in human ambulation? Or will the accruing volume make me lose my focus on why I’m doing it?
The getup, our crucial assessment activity of ID 2, is a major focus for me in 2020.
I hope it inspires in me a deeper understanding of load-shared ambulation.
As a bonus, I hope it inspires others to commit to this incredibly effective exercise in full-body load share.
We are about to find out.
