Earlier this week, a colleague referred to me as “lazy” for not chasing my PhD. I am “Lazy Kate.”
He may have been kidding. Maybe not.
This is a bone of contention I have buried long ago. I have a very full life. A PhD would see me taking time away from things in my forefront.
The “P” in PhD for me doesn’t stand for “philosophy.” It stands for prestige. It stands for professor. It stands for p-value: research endeavors.
At this time in my life, I don’t feel I need prestige or to be a full-time professor. I am loving this life of teaching, treating, and learning.
Is it not enough?
It is. Until it isn’t.
So, people can attempt to bully you into making choices that are right for THEM – of their vision of success. Or, you can make a decision about what is right for YOU.
As always, it’s your call.
So, my prestige may not be much without that PhD. But I never met a patient or student that were bothered by me having only a master’s degree and a non-PhD doctorate. They only care if I can help.
So until I want it, I don’t need it.
