After a particularly rough day this week, I woke up with a Bad Day Hangover.
I felt centered on my mistakes and missteps.
The wet, slushy day was no comfort. I felt my socks get soaked through. And my ride had car trouble.
I knew my foul attitude was making me feel worse. As I felt my feet get more and more cold, I felt my attitude shift with every breath in the cold New York air.
I kept repeating: “You are in charge of how you perceive your life.”
I channeled the words of strongman and fellow SFG Eric Moss:
“With every breath, breathe in the positive and out the negative. Do it until there’s nothing negative left.”
Can it be that easy? I had to try it.
It was.
I showed up to lab soaked from the snow but feeling alive and present.
As students and I focused and dissected the pelvic floor neurovasculature, a student said this to me:
“Dr. Dooley, I can’t tell you how cool this is. There is seriously no place on Earth I’d rather be right now.”
I had to bite my tongue to keep from tearing up.
Thank you, universe, for letting me help this future juggernaut physician who is bound to impact many lives.
Thank you for letting me help others in any way I can.
Thank you for the rough days that make me realize the greatness of life- if I just flip the script.
I’m convinced this is an act of health: the letting go of what doesn’t work, and the embracing of what moves us.
Breathe in, breathe out.
But as always, it’s your call.
