The Miracle of a Tumor

Dooley Noted: 12/24/2013

At NYU and Einstein, I help students learn cross sectional anatomy. So, I know when the anatomy Is normal – and when it is not.

When the oncologist pulled up the scan with Dad’s middle mediastinal (read: chest) tumor, I felt my insides implode with its magnitude.

Then, she showed the post-treatment scan.

The result? An over 90% tumor disappearance. All blood panels were normal.

It’s almost as if it were never there.

To watch the anatomy change was something I couldn’t bear. My sympathetic drive of joy and surprise were balanced by a parasympathetic burst of tears to calm it.

This is the miracle of a tumor.

While I wish it on no one, a tumor can unite a family. It can make you learn more about the prevention and treatment of cancer.

It can make you see how strong your family is.

It can make you learn how strong you are, and how much stronger you wish to become.

It can inspire you to educate the world, one person at a time.

It can make you realize how deep your roots grow.

Thank you, God, for this tumor.

Thank you, God, for its disappearance.

Miracles are real. Just because the tumor isn’t there, it doesn’t mean it never existed.

Sounds like a miracle to me.
