People that have known me of recent see me as a doctor, a teacher, and a kettlebell enthusiast.
I am all of those things.
But I received a Christmas gift yesterday from my fabulous niece, Lori Mae, who is six years my junior.
She has known me most of my life. And for most of my life, the music reigned supreme.
Lori Mae gave me a bracelet. One charm read “Aunt.” The other was a microphone.
I love my New York life, but this is why I love coming home. I spend very long work days without a note of song. But when I come to Indiana, it’s the “sound studio” in a car, late night karaoke, and jam sessions around Dad at the piano.
I needed the reminder to build in the music.
I had an ex-boyfriend ask me once, “What does music matter? Why do you find it so important?”
It’s a question I could never answer, with anything but, “It makes me feel something bigger than I.”
Isn’t that why the holidays are celebrated, after all?
Here’s to the holiday reminder to strike a balance with current loves and the past things that make us feel alive.
