Doctor Versus Parent

Dooley Noted: 12/28/2013

My best friend battles a chronic illness, so he finds himself in his doctor’s office every month.

Each time he visits, he asks many questions, but they are often left unanswered. His doctor is challenged, and he is given the energy that he is expected to do what he is told.

He’s never informed of all effects of medications, and he is never educated about drug interactions with current supplementation. He is discouraged from using all supplements – even his multivitamin.

My friend commented that he doesn’t feel like he is being educated about proper steps toward health. He feels he is being parented – as if he should do something because he’s been told to do it.

What bull.

I was shocked at this admission. The word doctor means teacher – not parent.

Too much information is at our patients’ fingertips to let this continue.

Demand more from your doctor, and the expectation is raised.

My best friend goes in educated, and he had to do some “doctor shopping” to find a physician to better educate him. He’s not completely satisfied, since he sees the educational efforts I provide for my patients.

You can absolute shop around and find a doctor to guide you – to teach you. Demand more from your doctor.

But as always, it’s your call.
