Early last year, I had a patient come to me for help with his back pain. He granted me permission to discuss what’s in this post.
While I enjoy helping patients see themselves out of pain, I had a particular challenge with this gentleman.
I couldn’t touch him.
So, the pressure was on me to actively rehabilitate and teach him how to help himself.
I film his correctives, and he performs them diligently.
He gets better very quickly.
He sends me videos weekly of his progress at the gym.
I offer video analysis as part of my service, not charging any extra for it. Some take me up on it. Some don’t.
The interesting fact is this: the more they send videos, the faster they get better.
This isn’t because I’m some genius analyst.
They are proactive patients, taking care into their own hands. I’m a mere catalyst, keeping them from hurting themselves by noting steps to stability, mobility, strength and safety.
The power is within the patient to gain control back of their movement. The pain and discomfort are perceived in their brains, not mine.
Only the patients can see their way out of pain.
As always, it’s their call.
