When you love your job, you can give until you break.
It can occur.
I’ve been close.
When you love what you do, it’s very hard to step back and take a break from doing it.
If it’s what you love, then why stop?
When I asked my dear friend Eric Chessen what he thought, he noted the following:
“It’s important to take a break from things you love – before the things you love break you.”
Eric is a fitness professional and entrepreneur. He managed to create a niche for himself in the fitness world, which is no easy feat. He is strong, fit, and brilliant. And I marvel at his ability not to over-schedule himself.
When I asked him for tips on break-taking, he offered the following:
1. Schedule in training as an appointment.
2. Schedule time to stare off into space. This contemplation is where new ideas are born.
3. Disallow guilt when taking time for yourself.
4. Don’t be a hypocrite. If someone told you he worked your schedule, think of what advice you’d give to him.
5. Make time for friends. Otherwise, they might think you’re too busy to approach you.
I’m starting to employ these simple suggestions, and I’m quickly noticing dramatic changes in the way I feel.
I also notice changes in my patient and student interactions.
I’m inspired to learn more on creating this intrinsic balance between a break from the love and the love potentially breaking me.
I hope you love what you do, but I hope you love yourself and your health first.
As always, it’s your call.
