I had the honor of guest speaking at Crunch gym in Manhattan, on 222 E 24th Street.
Mike Spiegel, Crunch’s fitness manager, requested some functional anatomy. So, we spent four hours discussing the spiral fascial line and dynamic stretching within this line.
Anatomy is much less daunting to learn if you see it and feel it for yourself. We looked at diagrams, then palpated on ourselves where we find the muscles. We then discussed how they act, as a solo unit and as a part of a kinetic chain.
The Crunch trainers were beyond bright and completely engaging. Even with varied backgrounds, they asked questions I have never been asked in 6 years of teaching anatomy.
We discussed everything from subtalar joint movement to head tilting. The biggest take home point delivered was that foot position exerting effects all the way to the skull, and vice versa.
We moved and played, observed and interacted. Before we knew it, four hours flew by!
I see a beautiful synergy growing between trainers and clinicians in New York. If we all start speaking the same language, we can understand what is best for the client.
I am constantly learning how to be a better clinician from the world of trainers. I strongly encourage movement enthusiasts to learn from other movement professionals.
As always, it’s your call.
