Appalled by Apparel

Dooley Noted: 5/27/14

On my patient visits, I request people bring tank tops and shorts.

But on the first visit, I rarely make them change.

I like to see the difference between wearing comfortable clothes and what they choose to wear in everyday life.

The difference can be dramatic!

Folks in business attire can barely move. They have button-down shirts that restrict arm and spinal movement.

They have pants that are at risk for splitting if they hip hinge or squat.

Couple that with a belt and dress shoes with a heel, and you have movement restriction for 8-14 hours per day!

I am appalled by the way apparel is designed to not allow us to move. But we are in luck!

Several companies provide “stretch” options with Lycra blends.

Other companies specialize in movement apparel, like The Clymb, REI, and yoga companies.

Having split my fifth pair of dress pants squatting yesterday, I believe an apparel overhaul is more than necessary. I’m certainly not going to stop squatting to save my pants!

As always, it’s your call.
