Last weekend, I had the honor of assessing the movement of Joel Schwartz, SFG. Like myself, Joel is a doctor, but not a medical or chiropractic one. He has a judicial doctorate, making him a lawyer.
I’d be willing to throw myself in front of a speeding bullet for my own awesome lawyer, so I wanted to pay special attention to Joel. Also, this lawyer keeps a kettlebell at work to take swing breaks, so he had my undivided attention.
Even though his swing was pretty solid as an SFG, I noticed his head came forward on each rep. I asked if he noticed it, and he said he didn’t feel it. We discussed centrating his cervical spine to keep him more safe and upright.
When he sent me pictures of him at work, the anterior head jutting of his swing was sitting right behind his desk. He was rounded forward through the upper midback, with the head jutted forward toward his work.
It’s amazing how our work positions show up in the workout. We may not always feel it, because we live in that body. This is why video is super helpful, especially if you train solo.
Joel is making his adjustments to feel better at work and at workouts. If you are assessing the workout and not assessing work, please consider it.
Most of us work 8-12 times longer than we workout. Work posture matters. It’s behavior that follows us into the gym.
As always, it’s your call.
