On the first visit, I tend to ask a goal the person would like to achieve.
I hear these common replies:
“I want to feel better.”
“I want to wake up without pain.”
“I want to lose 20 pounds.”
“I want to rid myself of anxiety.”
The next hour is filled with an arduous, in-depth discussion of the person’s intake.
I point out areas that may hinder the person’s goals. Sometimes, I see the face of enlightenment and inspiration. Other times, I see the look of frustration.
Sometimes, the person waits for the frustration to set in when they get home.
However it plays out, I know this much is true.
Goals are not about getting what you want. Goals are about taking what you want.
Many think the grass is always greener on the other side. We want what we can’t have. The only way you’ll know is if you take what you want and see for yourself. It’s about wanting what you won’t take.
Want to be pain-free? Lose a few pounds? It will take work. Take what you want by doing work.
Things may freakishly fall in your lap and happen. You can increase your odds of getting what you want by making goals with a clear-cut directive.
Then follow the directive. Take what you want.
Or, you can wait around and let life happen to you.
As always, it’s your call.
