The Bonus Father’s Day

Dooley Noted: 6/15/2014

Last year on Father’s Day, my dad was a very sick individual. I prepared myself on that day for it to be our last Father’s Day together.

Then, Dad kicked cancer in the teeth.

In retrospect, this man came full circle with his life. He went from smoking for 57 years to going a year without a single drag. He saw how cigarette smoking led to a consequence that left him battling to be alive each day.

It’s fascinating to watch someone rise like a phoenix.

His voice left – then came back.

His hair left – then came back.

His appetite, luster, passion, energy, and joy all left – then came back.

Watching this was heart-breaking but ultimately fascinating. He was already my hero. Now, he’s my real-life superhero.

I certainly don’t need a day to celebrate him.

Every day feels like Father’s Day to me.

I see him in my mirror and thank him from afar each day. I look at my crooked nose, my generosity, my blue eyes, my musical abilities and it’s like Fathers Day all over again.

Make no mistake and make every day a celebration of your father figures. Take time to reflect on what makes the things in him the things in you, too.

As always, it’s your call.
