Rolling the Dice

Dooley Noted: 6/23/2014

This past year has been a year of taking chances.

I went from a sole proprietor to owning three start-up businesses, while preparing a book for publication and still teaching anatomy for 6 colleges.

With “busy” noted as illusionary, I still had faith I would find a man that would want to share my unconventional, exciting life.

And I did.

He is supportive and kind, smart and strong. And he has known loss and success, much like my own.

With our timing never quite seeming to be perfect, we decided to roll the dice anyway.

To represent this, I gave him a pair of jade dice. In true class and affection, he gave one right back to me. He had them both lasered and strung into necklaces, and we wear them with the two facing out.

He took a gift to him and made it a connection between us.

Pure heart, this man.

I’m asked about this die every day, multiple times. I love telling the story of hope, chance, and giving things a shot.

So, you can imagine my devastation when we were running hill sprints this weekend, and my necklace broke.

It was a green die, lost in the green grass.

I quickly started losing hope, after searching frantically. He said we wouldn’t leave until we found it.

We rolled the dice and asked some nearby kids to help us.

After nearly an hour of searching, young Gary found the die.

I clutched this stranger with all my might. He never gave up looking, even when I was telling myself that we wouldn’t find it. It had value to him, because it had value to this lady in front of him.

I couldn’t stop clutching the necklace as we finished our training – and then for the rest of the night.

When I asked the other die holder why he would choose such a difficult partner, his answer was unexpected.

“I don’t need this to be easy. I want THIS.”

Hope, love, career, and challenges are all waiting for you, if you simply roll the dice. It won’t be easy. But it just might be worth the risk.

As always, it’s your call.
