Making a Reach

I’ve had my share of conventional education. But the most valuable lessons I’ve learned have been from my friends.

Last week, I got to traverse my town with the King of the 812 Posse, Adam Bledsoe. He is one of my best friends, ever since we bonded over MTV rap videos in high school.

Nearly two decades later, I’m shocked at how he will still drop knowledge bombs to get me thinking.

As we chatted on the subway, we discussed the fact that we both like to take the bill at a restaurant. We also discussed how people can take advantage of our kindness.

Bledsoe noted,”I’ll gladly pay…but make a reach.”

This got me thinking about more than just the check at dinner.

Oftentimes, people need others to experience a heightened sense of support.

It’s not just financial. It’s compassion down all avenues.

Even if you think you can’t help – make a reach anyway.

It people look troubled, make a reach to help. They might say no. Or, they might just need someone to offer it. A vote of confidence can sometimes knock enough dust off to start people onto cleaning up their own messes.

And on occasion, make the reach for the check. It feels good when someone buys you dinner.

As always, it’s your call.
