Agreeing to Disagree

I work in science, teaching anatomy for 6 universities.

So, people are quite shocked that I am a doctor of “alternative medicine.”

I am a chiropractor studying acupuncture, who some refer to as a movement specialist. Very little of what I do is backed up by a litany of peer-reviewed literature.

Many sources attempt to discount what I use to help patients.

I’m asked quite often: why do you use NKT, ART, SFMA, FMS, chiropractic, kettlebells, acupuncture, DNS, etc, if so few studies support these techniques?

Aren’t I a scientist?

So, I must state this.

I cannot base everything I do on whether or it has been supported by peer-reviewed literature. It takes so long to perform and publish research, and the political factors are so disheartening that it’s discouraged me from even doing my own peer-reviewed literature.

You’ll find my name on one paper and a few abstracts. I have no patience for it.

My friend Dr. Mark Smith is a brilliant researcher and therapist. He said something telling to me that I continue to carry with me.

“Try things out. Use what works. And if it works, encourage it to be researched to support why it works. But a lack of current support should not discourage you from trying what works.”

So, that’s how I work. I will quickly digress in arguments about it. I’ve simply had too many arguments, and no one wins. No one gets anything out of it, either, but frustration.

It’s the nature of being open-minded to new ideas.

Many well peer-reviewed techniques were used to treat my migraines for a decade. They failed miserably,

But it was my current system that got me – and many, many others – out of discomfort.

One day, I hope much more support exists for chiropractic, acupuncture, and everything else I use.

If you don’t agree with my choices, let’s agree to simply disagree.

Until then, I’ll continue to utilize them and help patients get results.

As always, it’s your call.
