On Professional Discipline

I offered to hold a lab review session at a rather unfavorable time for most: 9 am on Sunday.

I never expect anyone to show up on a Sunday morning to a volunteer review session. But the turnout can be seen in these pictures:

These are the future doctors of our world. They do whatever it takes to make sure they can serve people in one of the most challenging jobs known to man.

They will be under constant pressure to be correct in their lives, and it starts in medical school. They will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for the opportunity to learn through helping others.

There will be times they will fall short. They learn this early. But they discipline themselves to minimize those times.

This discipline doesn’t start when they receive a diploma.

The doctors they will become are shaped in medical school. Their attitude, knowledge, motivation, and discipline direct their professionalism.

I laughed, taught, and learned with a group of over 30 future physicians this morning. One of them might become your surgeon – your internist – your radiologist – and your light when times get dark.

Their discipline inspired me to work harder to do more for my patients and students.

You can sleep in when opportunity knocks. Or, you can get to motivating yourself and others.

As always, it’s your call.
