It Doesn’t Hurt…Yet

After a recent SI joint injury, I decided to deadlift again.

I worked my way up to 185 pounds with no pain. This may seem light, but it’s exciting to lift without pain once you’ve had it!

Since I wanted to avoid any potential injury, I asked my amazing Catalyst SPORT colleague Joe Gonzalez to make sure I was safe in technique at 205.

The pull went up fine. But Joe took a video for me to watch.

I had a complete valgus collapse of the knee on the right side! This is when the knee points inwards It wasn’t present just a few days before. I couldn’t even feel it, but I was heavily loading a very faulty pattern!

I had no knee pain. I had no pain at all, anywhere. You don’t have to already have pain to be set up for it.

I don’t want knee pain, just because my body is avoiding SI joint pain. I’m not going to rob Peter to pay Paul, as my grandma would say.

Your pain may come or go, but the dysfunction may persist. This dysfunction must be addressed so injuries presentations and recurrences may be prevented.

You had better believe I don’t want a 205 deadlift with valgus collapse. I’ll regress to progress without increasing injury potential, and I’ll do it in a pain-free realm.

Get assessed. Get corrected.

I’ve had pain. I don’t want it again. Prevention is much easier than cure.

As always, it’s your call.
