Something unsettling is happening.
I surround myself with people that are committing their lives to the healthcare of others.
These are some of the most brilliant students and colleagues existing on the planet.
But as I pass the elevator, I watch these people crowd into it.
I watch this happen all day.
At the two schools I’m teaching for right now, the labs are on the sixth floor.
I understand this is a feat.
But isn’t that the idea of health and fitness? Or even success?
There is no elevator. You take the stairs.
Fitness isn’t something you “have.” Most components of health aren’t, either.
They are something you earn.
Your choice to take the stairs matters. It matters just as much as the grades you get or the commitment you have to your patient.
In fact, taking the stairs shows commitment to your patient. You’re leading by example.
Will you be tired or out of breath at the top of the staircase?
Maybe.
But it will get easier and easier the more you do it.
One day, it won’t feel hard at all.
You’ll start taking the stairs because it feels great.
Next time you’re in the doctor’s office, consider if your doctor practices what he or she preaches about health.
Your doctor must be your teacher.
And if you see your doctor in the elevator, consider if that doctor is leading by example.
You deserve inspiration to be at your best health.
As always, it’s your call.
