I work with some of the most competent and professional educators on Earth.
I listen to them communicate, articulate, and demonstrate. It seems so natural for them.
But it isn’t.
Communication in education is based on behavior. And behaviors are learned.
If you want to be a top-notch professional, then you learn from and surround yourself with the best in your business. And these professionals only strive to be better than they were yesterday.
There’s no room for ego.
Ego inhibits your professional development.
This week, a surgeon described a pathological cadaveric finding to students and me. He didn’t look down on me, even though I have four decades less medical experience and have never been a surgeon.
He talked to me as if I were any other colleague, and he treats us all colleagues the same. He treats the students the same, also.
His knowledge is uncanny, yet he constantly stays sharp by reading journals. He talks about what he has learned, and he leaves the door open to learn more.
I’m learning every day about the humble nature of experts. True experts never regard themselves as such, and they are always striving to learn and know more.
If you want to be at the top of your profession, surround yourself with humble, competent professionals that are seeking even more professional development.
As always, it’s your call.
