Look Alive

Dooley Noted: 1/8/2015

Yesterday, I zoned out twice.

The first was in a taxi, where the new driver took me a mile in the wrong direction before I noticed.

The second was on the subway, where my train changed routes midway. My lack of attention ended me up in Brooklyn.

I paid the price for both losses of attention.

This made me wonder if my patients might not be looking alive in their sessions.

This morning, one of my patients was struggling with balance in the single leg deadlift.

She was wavering all over the place.

I asked if her thoughts were elsewhere.

They were.

She and I both needed a reminder of looking alive and being totally present.

So, we focused our eyes on a target.

We zoned in on out breathing, checking in on abdominal stability.

We felt our tripods of the feet in contact with the ground before initiating the movement.

And on the first try, we both executed near perfect single leg deadlifts.

She said it all:

“Whoa. Awareness matters.”

I hope you check in and look alive today.

As always, it’s your call.
