I am a chiropractor that co-owns a facility with two amazing athletes and expert coaches. Joe Boffi is a Muay Thai boxer and all-around incredible athlete. Jason Kapnick is an elite powerlifter.
Since we opened in July, not a day has passed that I don’t see someone barbell deadlifting.
I only knew the kettlebell deadlift, so I took one look at the barbell and avoided it.
But as I felt my strength stagnate, I asked Jason to help me with the barbell deadlift.
All I needed was solid instruction and a plan.
Week after week, I became stronger in everything I was doing, because of one day a week of barbell deadlifting.
I also felt minor aches and pains vanish.
I needed to know more. So we at Catalyst SPORT asked Dr. Michael Hartle to come this past weekend and teach the StrongFirst Barbell Instructor Certification course.
Dr. Hartle is also a chiropractor, as well as an elite powerlifter and semi-professional football player.
And he brought an incredible teaching team with him to teach attendees the basic components of strength.
I was amazed at the carryover I witnessed with rehabilitation and training with other tools.
We discussed the anatomy of strength; lats. glutes, thoracolumbar fascia, and abdominal muscles.
We learned biomechanical breathing techniques to keep the spine stable and safe.
We were consistently coached on spinal safety and joint protection.
After every lifting evolution, we were taught how to properly program the lifts for clients and for ourselves.
While the coaching staff was incredibly helpful, I was most impressed with the attendees.
There was a dead even split between males and females. Women are finally learning that to truly be fit and protected, one must be strong.
Several of the attendees were stay at home moms, one with quadruplets! She didn’t use having four children at one time as an excuse not to crush her goals.
To see these strong men and women in our facility was one of the best moments of my life so far.
If your fitness goals have holes, consider picking up a barbell and taking this certification.
As always, it’s your call.
