Knocked Loose

Dooley Noted: 3/25/2015

It started in November 2014.

I woke up with pain in the back of my arm.

As I was warming up for a workout, I couldn’t bear weight on my right arm without getting searing 10/10 pain in the back of my arm.

I passed all the orthopedic tests.

I had consistent acupuncture, herbal, chiropractic, massage and physical therapy treatments. I was assessed by an orthopedist.

Seven different therapists. Seven different opinions. All very helpful.

But I still couldn’t post or press without pain.

I tried deloading. Pain was still there.

So, I worked around the injury, consistently giving feedback to people working with me.

And then, I experienced a head injury in Australia, along with some significant life changes upon my return.

My first workout off the flight was a jetlagged, emotionally and physically drained version of myself.

So, I decided to keep it light.

I did a body weight get-up.

There was no pain.

So, I increased the load little by little, making it to 22 kilos.

Still no pain.

I rolled over to the bell, hugging and kissing its horns.

Five months of no traditional getups, and it took some major life interference to make the pain dissipate.

My business partner Joe said this: “Maybe that head injury showed you the pain was in your head the whole time.”

He was joking, but only halfway.

Pain is perceived at the cerebral level.

And at five months, that pain is a chronic faulty program, run by the cerebrum.

But I know some shortly great things came out of that injury..

My form is getting more strict.

My left side is now as strong as my right side

And not all pain is caused by injury.

Some of it is faulty programming.

To get to the source of your pain, be prepared to take a journey in self-discovery.

As always, it’s your call.
