Since November, I have lived with two great pains that threatened to squash my strength goals.
And I did a pretty great job of earning them.
I earned some stability and strength discrepancies.
I absolutely knew they were there before the pain came.
I could press more with my right arm.
I couldn’t pistol as well with my right leg.
I loaded those patterns until one day – it hurt to load both of those patterns.
So, I out-sourced for advice and in-sourced for more body awareness.
The pain did not magically dissipate.
I’m so glad no one waved a magic wand to dissipate my discomfort.
My pain was an education in what I was missing.
I worked hard to correct my discrepancies, and it took 6 months to get them in check.
Today, I pistol squatted 20 kilo – on both sides – pain free.
Even Steven.
Had I not looked my strength discrepancy right in the eye, I may have never achieved that goal.
Then, I pressed a 20 kilo bell four times – on both sides – pain free.
Had I not been struck with pain on my strong press side, I may have just packed more strength on top of a dysfunction.
And by strengthening my left side, I am convinced it improved my right hip stability (since they move together in gait).
You can curse pain and will for it to go away.
Or, you can own up to why you have it and fix the discrepancies.
You may end up with something you’ve never had: more symmetry.
As always, it’s your call.
