I want to thank my parents, for never once telling me I was special.
In fact, they let me know I was more like everyone else.
I did not deserve special treatment.
They taught me to see the common ground in everyone I met.
We like to own our aches and pains, assuming no one else feels them like we do.
While we have our unique perceptions of all things, we get much more out of the common ground.
We can understand that while we have our unique experience of life, we are connected and can learn from one another.
When I watch people get themselves out of pain, I don’t tell them they are special.
I tell them they are awesome.
And every one of my patients has that same potential, should they chose to embrace it.
You can continue to think your pain is special.
Or you can look to those who have gotten themselves out of pain to remind you that you’re not.
As always, it’s your call.
