Tale of Two Doctors
Yesterday, I shared a personal health struggle and how I viewed it as an education.
I received two simultaneously emails within seconds of posting the note.
These emails were from two different doctors, with two different methods of approach.
Doctor 1: He approached me like an ambulance chaser, telling me he could help me with my migraines.
(I assume he didn’t bother to read the post.)
Doctor 2: He approached me with an offer of a patient referral, since I was successfully treating my migraines and had experience with the issue.
I teach seminars for doctors, so I’m well aware that most therapists feel they must constantly be perfect.
Should anything be bothering them, they must “fix” it – and typically do it behind closed doors.
Here’s the truth.
Doctors have health struggles, too. They are people like anyone else.
After I asked Doctor 1 if he read the post, I told him he might consider checking his professional integrity. He then proceeded to call me names and tell me I had “issues.”
(I suppose I made a good call. I didn’t know name-calling helped migraines.)
Doctor 2 has it right.
If a doctor has gone through an issue, he or she is one of the best to coach the patient through the issue.
Let’s all stop pretending we are perfect – not just on social media, but in life.
Let’s start educating people from what we’ve learned from our struggles.
As always, it’s your call.
