Patients Aren’t Stupid

Dooley Noted: 6/29/2015

The vast majority of my patients are sent to me by referral.
So, they walk in with high expectations.

Sometimes, they believe I am some magical sorceress, appearing in their lives to take away all discomfort.

I’m no mystical healer. (Sorry to disappoint.)

But they always leave with an education.

What they all have in common is that other practitioners have assumed they didn’t want to know the details.

They’ve been given scripts without being encouraged to read the fine print.

They’ve been given a scroll of home exercise, with no guidance nor attention to the details.
Maybe the practitioners don’t make the time to educate.

But the patients aren’t stupid.
They know their bodies better than anyone else. But, they may need a guide to understanding how the body works.

If “doctor” translates as “teacher,” then that is my job.

So yes, you will learn words like “pronation” and “supination,” as well as what they mean.
You may learn that whatever diet you read about on the Internet may be helpful to one person but not healthy for you.

You will come to understand your current limitations and how to work through them.

And yes, you will be held accountable to initiating the change you seek to get yourself out of pain.

I will not dumb anything down, because you aren’t stupid if you came to me for help.

I will give you as much information as you seek to consume.

And you’ll be surprised at your ability to get yourself out of pain and prevent injury.
You can let people assume you don’t want to know details.

Or, you can demand more out of your practitioners to educate you on how to help yourself.

As always, it’s your call.
