The Person: Danny Quirk
Profession: artist, co-creator/teacher/artist for Immaculate Dissection anatomy seminar series
How I know him:
I have the honor of meeting Danny Quirk through our trusted colleague and friend, the great Dr. Frank Scali.
I met Danny on the subway, on the way to my laboratory to show the boys what I have been working on in human dissection.
As an anatomic artist, Danny was immediately enthused. He made a point to audit my summertime anatomy course, even participating in human dissection.
He drove hours just to attend 12 classroom hours, then would drive back home.
He showed me his new project, where he painted on another anatomy enthusiast, the great Anna Folckomer.
My students actually left their own dissections to walk over to Anna and Danny, where he was painting the extensor compartment of the forearm.
Immaculate Dissection seminar series was born.
How he’s changed me:
I thought I worked hard, until I met Danny Quirk. I have watched this man go on 10 minutes of sleep, after painting for an entire evening. He is a marvel of dedication to his work, and like me, money is not the driver.
I learned from Danny that the work can be inspiring, fun, and eventually pay your bills. But the quality of the work must always be the driving force.
Danny is always thinking of ways to innovate his own work, and he’s constantly trying to improve the outcome.
I feel lucky and so proud to work with Anna and Danny for each aspect of this seminar series.
And if you have not seen Danny’s art in print or in action, you might want to make a point to follow him.
We are changing the way anatomy is taught across this universe, and Danny is an integral part of that force.
