People Who’ve Changed Me: Part 38

Dooley Noted: 9/3/2015

The Person: David Whitley

His Profession: Master StrongFirst kettlebell instructor; owner and lead instructor at Nashville Kettlebell;  performing Strongman

How I Met Him:

I first saw David Whitley swinging 300 pounds of weight on a YouTube video. After I shared it on social media, Dave reached out to me. It was like talking to a celebrity!

When he came into my area for a Jersey strongman show in 2012, some friends and I took the train to meet with him at his hotel.

A few hours later, we were doing get-ups and swing analysis in a hotel hallway!

How He Has Changed Me:

I’ve had the honor now of hosting Dave for two seminars on strength here in New York City. Dave has reiterated many times the importance of breath control and strength. He also shows me that absolutely anything is humanly possible.

I saw this to be true as he bent wrenches in half right in front of my face, in order to inspire me to press a 22 kg KB over my head!

He was one of the first people in my life to tell me: “Dools, get out of your own way.”

Dave believes in the power of the mind to build absolute strength. If your mind is cluttered and doubtful, you can’t access strength. Dave’s mobility, stability, and strength are in equal parts, something rare among strong people.

Dave inspires me to protect my body but also prove it to be limitless. I’m honored to be in the same room with him, let alone call him my friend.
