Superhero Marriage

Superhero Marriage

Today, I watched my business partner Joe Boffi marry his beloved, Alex.

I have known Joe for a few years now. I can see the beautiful balance that he and Alex have obtained in the years they’ve known each other.

I’ve also watched my parents maintain a 48-year marriage.

I find marriage fascinating.

What makes a couple make the jump?

Marriage is the only time in life when we are encouraged to mix business with pleasure.

We have an enormous failure rate for marriage in United States, as well as over most of the globe.

As divorce becomes more and more fashionable, it doesn’t discourage people from biting the marriage bullet.

It must be challenging to be married. Those vows take a superhero’s will to follow for a lifetime.

Till death do us part?

In sickness and in health?

As long as we both shall live?

The people that commit to marriage seem like superheroes to me.

I found it very interesting that Joe’s groomsmen and he wore superhero boutonnieres and tie colors matching their respective hero.

It takes a willingness to stand in front of someone and take some hits on their behalf.

It takes a level of selflessness to be there for someone, despite what you may want to that moment.

To me, it is not much different than my commitment to my patients, to my students, to my career, and to my family and friends.

Should I be faced one day with that offer of marriage, I hope my life thus far will have been the superhero training I will need to honor that commitment.

To Alex and Joe, to Mom and Dad, and to all the other couples making marriage work, you are my superheroes.

For all those considering becoming marriage superheroes, I hope you change the world with your commitment.

As always, it’s your call.
