Briar James

Dooley Noted: 10/13/15

I was 16 when you came into my life.

Once I held you, I knew I was holding someone special.

You barely cried. You still don’t.

You always saw the joy in things, even as a baby.

I could make you laugh just by crossing my eyes.

You never let machismo get in the way of me hugging you.

Today, you turn 21.

And I’m still so proud of the man that you are.

You’re such a loving, wonderful nephew, son, grandson, uncle, and boyfriend.

You treat everyone you meet with kindness.

You look up to me – but I look up to you, too.

On my best day, I’m trying to be the woman you see your aunt to be.

And I think I’m getting it done to the best of my ability.

That’s your influence, my godson.

It’s such an honor to now share official adulthood with you.

I hope every man and woman lucky enough to meet you learns from you.

Your kindness and humility are to be emulated.

Your musical talent is to be enjoyed and revered.

And your capacity to give and show love has been the same since you were a baby.

Please never lose that, my dear nephew.

The world needs people like you.

Happy 21st birthday, Briar James.

I can’t wait to share a drink with you – and toast to all you have given me.

Honor those who change you.

As always, it’s your call.
