Last week, my friend Christina asked me to spend a weekend with her.
I told her I didn’t have any free weekends until June 2016.”
She said, “Girl, it’s October.”
I said, “Yes. I know.”
She said, “Okay, I guess I’ll take a number. Put me on the list. I want to be next in line.”
She said it without any malice.
I got off that call and hanged my head.
I love my jobs.
But did I really need to work 7 days a week, nearly every week?
My friends have taken a backseat to my career for many years, because they realize the passion I have for my work.
But the balance is weighed in work’s favor.
If one does not leave room for open time, then change is unlikely to ever occur.
Then, you’re running through the motions instead of feeling inspired.
You can’t just give inspiration. You have to receive it, too.
My friends absolutely inspire me.
And while I am consistently inspired by working, I think I may be missing out on some things.
I don’t want my friends to take a number.
They want to be high up in my queue.
Seeking balance between work and personal lives is an ultimate goal.
Even if I start with a weekday phone call, it ignited the fire of approaching balance.
I am still doing important work, even if I’m not at work every weekend.
And it’s like the great Jason Kapnick states: “If your business can’t run without you being there, then you don’t have a business – you have a job.”
So, Christina, thank you for the burst of inspiration.
I’m coming to hang with you, girl.
You can give as much as you want. But you can also take from those that offer you love, support, and their time to share with you.
As always, it’s your call.
