Yesterday, we had our first lab at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The faculty was introduced to the M1 class before our first lab.
Dr. Sodofsky, a brilliant pathologist, gave a golden piece of advice for the students who would soon be studying a cadaver patient, head to toe.
He encouraged them to understand that normal doesn’t really exist.
“There is no normal…only ranges.”
I found this to be intriguing and inspiring.
Whether it’s pathology or physiology, normal doesn’t exist.
Whether it’s strength or fitness, normal doesn’t exist.
It’s all about ranges of healthy and of normal.
I am not a chiseled, carved from stone fitness professional.
But I am in a healthy, normal range of fitness.
I am not a magician or outlier healer, but I am in a normal range of competency for helping people.
I have not been voted Teacher of the Year, nor do my seminars always sell out. But I’m in a range of great competency for helping students learn.
And as long as I can inspire one student to learn, I’ll keep teaching.
As long as I can inspire one person to pull themselves up to a bar, I’ll keep coaching it.
And as long as I can help one person get herself out of pain, I will do it.
Normal ranges can go a long way.
If you don’t feel like a superstar today, that is okay.
To someone else, you probably fall on the higher end of the norm.
To another, you fall at the lower end of the norm.
Just remember there’s always a range – and there’s always someone you can help.
As always, it’s your call.
