People Who’ve Changed Me: Part 47

Dooley Noted: 11/5/2015

The Person: Talia Mariani

Profession: strength coach at Catalyst SPORT

How I know her:

I met Talia when she started training her clients at Catalyst SPORT. We bonded over mutual love of musical theater and mutual goal of becoming an Iron Maiden.

(Iron Maidens can press, pistol squat, and do a tactical pull-up, all with a 24 kilo kettlebell.)

How she’s changed me:

Talia battles an autoimmune condition known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). This disorder makes her metabolism very sluggish, no matter what she consumes and no matter what her energy output is for the day.

Despite her frustrations with biomedical treatments for HT, she eats modest portions of a healthy diet, while working hard to become an Iron Maiden and inspiration to her clients and colleagues.

She’s one of the strongest women I know, pressing a 28 kilo kettlebell (!) and deadlifting 315 pounds.

She helps me understand that despite a health struggle, the dedication to fitness can’t take a back seat. Fitness coexists with the achievement of full health.

And she is also one of the most hilarious and fun people I’ve met in ages.
