The Softness of Heavy Metal

Dooley Noted: 11/9/2015

I’m in the beginning of my steel-bending days.

Steel seems so improbable to bend with your hands. But with enough force and correct technique, the molecules warm, move, and give to your pressure.

It is a feeling like no other.

Last night, I went to my first heavy metal concert.

It’s not my first pick for listening pleasure. In fact, I’d consider it to be at the bottom of my list.

But when you’re a gym owner, you learn quickly that people like heavy metal to lift heavy things.

Just as the iron gives way to the eager, focused hand, thoughts of self-doubt give way to the hard music with its iron fist and powerful lyrics.

Seeing heavy metal performed in person, I watched the crowd move like a joint force. They moved like the steel molecules being bent under my hands.

They moved in all directions. It looked violent from afar. But when I looked closer, it looked more warming, as the people collided under a joint force of the music.

I learned they weren’t listening to create chaos. They were attempting to bend clouding thoughts until they broke.

Suddenly, I saw a softness to the heavy metal music: it was the same softness I feel when steel gives way to my hands.

I could have never observed this, had I quickly skirted away from music with which I didn’t resonate.

Now, that type of music has changed for me forever.

Everything is a matter of your perspective. And if you open up your mind to learn, the possibilities are endless.
You might see the opposite side of all things in front of you.

As always, it’s your call.
