The Person: Jonathan Fernandez
Profession: professional strongman, strength trainer, assistant administrator for Immaculate Dissection
How I know him:
As Catalyst SPORT hosted the Coney Island Strongman Seminar, instructor Chris Rider kept mentioning an amazing strongman named Jonathan Fernandez.
Chris described him as his best student, a man who could do feats of strength that few or no one could do, like bend pennies with his knuckles and bend wrenches in S shapes.
When Chris saw I was headed to Denver one weekend, he texted me to make sure I was making time to meet Jonathan.
Little did I know I would be meeting my new best friend.
How he’s changed me:
Jonathan offered a hand of help as a friend when I was in utter depths of sadness. He offered to teach me techniques on focus that he had learned over decades of meditation and his time studying with Buddhist monks.
Jonathan experienced the lowest of lows in his life, just to learn the power within himself to rise above all of it.
He has been the mirror to show me that all the humor, compassion, purpose, and beauty I have shown the world has not been ignored.
He also shows me that true strength is not a matter of the muscle but of the mind.
To watch his feats of strength, check out his YouTube channel at StrongmanFernandez.
You can watch him bend horseshoes into hearts and tear seemingly impossible notches into cards, as well as various other demos proving that mental power translates as physical power.
