While teaching NeuroKinetic Therapy I today in London, we had an important discussion about the role of releasing tight structures.
It’s common to feel tightness somewhere and want to bring mobility to said structure.
But what happens when that tightness of the structures is attempting to stabilize you?
Tight, painful structures are often not the structures that need your immediate attention.
Many times, that discomfort you perceive is a structure already on stretch!
It’s like the great Gray Cook states: “If your foam roller hasn’t fixed it by now, it probably never will.”
If you find the foam roller gives you benefit, then by all means, include it in your care.
But if you find yourself always foam rolling the same structures with no changing results, then you might be bringing a mobility correction to a stability or motor control problem.
Consider getting assessed and corrected.
You may need an objective eye to show you that the structure you are foam rolling is hanging on its last stable leg – as you try to foam roll it off a stability cliff.
As always, it’s your call.
