Sweating the Technique

Dooley Noted: 1/20/2016

Lately, I’ve received an influx of emails from people asking what things they should study and what technique seminars they should take.

I am fascinated that they find my opinion interesting, let alone an authority.

So, my answer is always the same:
“Do what resonates with you.”

I have no idea what will resonate with me, let alone someone else.

So, if it calls to you, by all means chase it and learn it.

One of my favorite expressions from a hip-hip song of the 90s includes one of my professional mottos:

“Don’t sweat the technique.”

Sometimes people want out of pain.

Other times they want more mobility or strength.

No matter the goal, many pathways can lead a client to the same destination.

I won’t say my chosen techniques are better or worse than others.

I use things that resonate with me.

But I immediately become skeptical when someone becomes dogmatic or trash talks another technique.

Sounds to me like they sweat the techniques used by others – when they might just be masking their insecurities with their chatty game.

Remember: many roads can get you to a goal.

And many techniques can help a client achieve their objectives.

Do what resonates.

The only sweat in the technique can be your effort to do good work.

As always, it’s your call.
