Cross Country Road Trip: Days 1 and 2

Dooley Noted: 1/29/2016

My boyfriend Jonathan and I left New York City at the break of dawn Thursday morning for a flight to Denver, Colorado.

We hit our trials and tribulations, as the airline nearly lost my kettle bell and Jonathan’s storage unit experienced a burglary.

But as adversity was thrown our way, we showed what true teammates that we are.

We didn’t let adversity bother us much, and we let it fuel us to get things done with a positive outlook.

When you choose a partner just as positive as you, it exponentially increases your own choices towards positivity.

We drove down from Denver to Taos, New Mexico, Jonathan’s hometown.

Taos is the kind of town where the entire family lives on the same street.

Houses are often made with the families bare hands, and they stand for many, many years.

We woke up Jonathan’s grandmother, who just last month had lost her husband.

Through her sadness, she was still the most beautiful and gracious host. But the family’s loss of their patriarch was fresh and tangible in the air.

This beautiful family welcomed me into their homes, and today they gave me an amazing tour of Taos.

It was the birthday of their patriarch.
Though Mr. Fernandez has entered a new realm, he was still very much there in the beautiful stories of love they told.

We had a perfect brunch with the best enchiladas I’ve ever tasted.

We saw earthships, with self-sustaining houses made of adobe, tires, and cans.

We saw the Rio Grange Gorge Bridge, with gorgeous mountains towering over a nearly 700 foot drop to the river.

And Jonathan and I showed our unity as a couple, as we ripped phone books for my new family that cheered us on.

They say you really learn something about a person when you road trip with them.

As we entered Oklahoma, I thought of how I’m so glad I never settled for less than what Jonathan offers.

I hope you stay tuned for tomorrow’s adventures.

As always, it’s your call.
