Pushing the Pull Door

Dooley Noted: 2/5/2016

Today, my beloved and I had a lovely London afternoon helping to move flats with my amazing friends, Rob Kavanagh and Chris Srithrian.

Chris and Rob always supply a think-tank of information over a simple lunch. We discussed everything from hitting rock bottom to consciousness to Chinese medicinal interventions.

But it was something Rob said while holding the door that floored me and made me think.

He pushed on a door marked “pull.”
He put forth a good, solid effort to open it.

It didn’t budge.

He then noted the marking, and he said, “Ah. I’ve been pushing on the pull door my whole life.”

It made me think about my patients, friends, and even myself.

I’ve watched enormous effort be placed to move something that was never built to move with them in the way they were pushing.

You can push with everything that’s in you, when all you had to do was use minimal effort in the other direction.
If the harder you are pushing sees you meeting more resistance, you may need to step back and evaluate why your push isn’t working.

It may not be your lack of effort.
You may need to reevaluate the technique needed for the direction you are headed.

It may take less effort than you think.

As always, it’s your call.
