When Doing It for Yourself Isn’t Enough

Dooley Noted: 2/23/2016

A patient said something significant to me yesterday.

She said, “I can’t just do this for me. I need to be healthy for my kids. I want to be around for them – and to play with them down on the ground!”

I would love to tell you that all my patients will invest in healthy habits for the good of themselves.

But they won’t always.

Sometimes, they need another source of dedication.

I don’t think dedication is reliant on motivation.

Motivation fades.

But true dedication never does.

If you are dedicated – truly committed – to someone or something, then take care of yourself for the sake of your dedication.

If you have kids, stay healthy so you can help them live well.

If you found the love of your life, stay healthy so you get maximum time with him or her.

If you have the job of your dreams, stay healthy so you can create a body of work that deserves you at your best.

If doing it for yourself is not enough, be true to what you are dedicated.

The heart feeds the whole body – but it feeds itself first.

Otherwise, it can’t take care of to what it is dedicated.

As always, it’s your call.
