I’ve always heard that weddings are stressful.
I was bound and determined to have one free from stress.
While teaching overseas for two weeks with my fiancé, we found the wedding planning to be relatively low-key.
Then, unexpected things started to occur.
People started to RSVP super late.
Other people started to cancel last minute.
Seating charts got altered.
Orders became hard to manage.
Flights got delayed. Sand and rainstorms altered travel arrangements.
Things culminated with me losing my passport and every dollar in cash that Jonathan and I had on us for the trip.
Today, Jonathan and I had one of the most stressful mornings of our relationship.
But when all the families accidentally came together for drinks this evening, I noticed something amazing.
Everyone started to mesh without Jonathan’s and my interference.
People were excited to come together and celebrate two people that they loved.
Families and friends were merging, creating new connections.
And the one thing they all had in common was Jonathan and I.
All the stress I felt about the wedding seemed to melt away in an instant.
I was left with an emptiness for being so hard on myself.
When Jonathan and I stood back and watched everyone interact, we realized the true currency in this world.
It wasn’t in food orders.
It wasn’t in late RSVPs or no-shows.
It was in the merging of people that love us to create more love and connection.
So while stress may come into life in keystone moments, it doesn’t have to derail you.
But you may need to step back and examine the macrocosm if you’re too stressed at examining the microcosm.
As always, it’s your call.
