I have the honor of being a movement specialist.
Something I do first visit, and every subsequent visit, is assess gait.
I am fascinated by the ghosts of burden we carry as we move through space.
The handbag a lady holds up on her right shoulder? It’s still there in her gait when she puts the bag down.
The sprained ankle from junior high basketball? It’s still there in his heel when he walks across our gym.
The abdominal scar she bears from her emergency appendectomy? It’s still limiting her core support as she ambulates.
Our ghosts can dominate he way we move, if we don’t give ourselves permission to accept their effects.
Since movement is a behavior, we can learn to not let them control our choices in movement.
We can bring the unconscious awareness of their effects right to our conscious discipline.
Only then can we create a strategy for leaving the ghosts of burden to be nothing but a memory.
Your scars matter.
Your ankle sprains matter.
Your habits in life matter.
They all contribute to the way you move through space.
If you feel discomfort associated with them, consider guidance from a movement specialist.
Ghosts of burden may root deeply, but all behaviors have the potential for change.
As always, it’s your call.
