It’s Just A Wrench

Last Sunday, Catalyst SPORT hosted the Breakthrough Strength seminar, which included bending nails and bolts, ripping phone books and cards, and driving nails through boards.

You know, a typical Sunday.

Chris Rider handed me a 6 inch adjustable wrench, and he told me I was going to bend it in half in front of the class.

He said, “It’s just a wrench.”

My husband turned to me and reminded me that most of that wrench was empty space.

Even though I knew this was true, I expressed my doubts that I could bend it.

Then Chris said, “I know you can do it. Do you?”

When the time came to bend it, he wrapped its edges in swede.

I said to myself, “It’s just a wrench.”

He handed me the item and it yielded to my hands, with such ease that it shocked me.

Now, I grew up seeing small adjustable wrenches throughout the entirety of my childhood.

It had never occurred to me as a child to bend one with my hands.

That would be impossible.

But the impossible becomes probable once you see someone else do it.

People might look at my penholder and think, “It’s just a wrench.”

They are right.

But when you start watching yourself do what seemed once impossible, you start wondering what else you can do.

Suddenly, that red nail certification doesn’t seem so far away.

Every kettlebell seems liftable.

Every task seems doable.

Every part of your life seems manageable.

And it starts with a wrench, sitting on your desk every day, reminding you that the impossible only exists within the confines of your efforts.

It may be just a wrench.

But it serves as a reminder that nothing can stop me.

I hope you start to look at wrenches a little differently, whatever shapes those wrenches take in your life.

As always, it’s your call.
