When The Patient Leaves

Dooley Noted: 5/3/2017

This week, I had a patient decide to leave my care.

Yes, it happens to me, too.

Now matter how much I meditate about it, It still hurts – because it’s very hard for me to separate my person from my business.

She did not resonate with my methodology, and after four visits, she decided she was never going to.

These patients are always a kick in the teeth, making me search for more meaning in what I do and a better way to present it.

This is so I can help as many people as possible – knowing I will never be able to reach everyone.

If you pay attention, though, the universe always gives you an equal and opposite reaction to your efforts.

On my morning walk, I received a message from a very satisfied patient, who wanted to connect me with a colleague.

At the perfect time, he wrote this:

“As you both know, I’m a trial lawyer that has sued medical professionals for malpractice and that regularly consults with top medical experts in the course of my practice. As such, I feel qualified to recognize those docs that truly excel in their work, and have the focus and empathy have me as a patient.

Kathy Dooley is easily one of the most knowledgeable doctors I’ve ever worked with. She is also a go-getter and model for having a practice and a life.”

Learn from the failure, and let the energy of the positive changes propel you.

You’re a therapist? And you’re not perfect? That is okay. It’s called “practice” for a reason.

Admit the struggle.

You never know who you is watching you overcome it so they can overcome their own.

As always, it’s your call.
