Leave it to New York City people to inspire me every day.
Yesterday, I was at Penn Station, catching a ride on the 2 to the Bronx.
As most people gladly took the escalator, I found freedom on the stairs.
Then, I ran into a blockade of a man in front of me. In the past, I would get frustrated if someone slowed my course. But I’ve slowed some, and I took a moment to root my breath.
The man in front of me turned and said, “So sorry, Miss, please go around us. You can fit.”
I didn’t see that he was supporting someone from behind.
It was a man, using a walker to climb the stairs.
I had to bite my tongue to keep from crying with inspiration.
His supporter had his hands gently on his sides, making sure he’d break the man’s fall or steady his course. He gently encouraged him, saying things like, “You’re looking good.”
There was such a stillness in them both. They were calm and focused. They were working towards a goal.
He could have easily taken an elevator. But he did work instead.
So, if you’re circling the gym for the closest parking space, or taking the elevator up to your workout – please stop and think.
Why are you going to the gym, if you aren’t making the world your gym?
But as always, it’s your call.
