The Family You Make

Dooley Noted: 4/19/2015

I adore the family into which I was born.

I miss them so deeply that I often count the days until I visit them.

But it certainly wouldn’t be a healthy life not building a family of my own where I currently live.

Children and a husband aren’t in my current cards.

So, it was up to me to make a New York family for myself.

And today, I deeply miss that family.

That family is the crew at Catalyst SPORT.

This is not just some gym I co-own.

My CS family inspires me every day to be a doctor of whom they can be proud to counsel.

My CS family inspires me every moment of every day.

I miss the busy times, where you can hear solid coaching cues, focused tension breathing, and the delicious clang of the PR bell.

I miss the quieter times, when the boys are giving cues to help another trainer’s press or deadlift.

I miss watching fantastic clinicians walk their patients to the door as they exit with a glow in their eyes. They’re glowing with the joy of finding a place to get top-notch care.

I miss watching my partners train and make strength and fitness gains, while showing me that fitness is a daily commitment.

I miss the well-oiled machine of a semi-private training session, where the clients could easily be mistaken for trainers.

I miss the sound of Joe Boffi going 40 mph on the assault bike.

I miss Jason Kapnick asking a lady that can’t lift half as much as him about how his body works.

And the laughter – I miss the billowing laughter of the crew and clients of the best gym in New York City.

To me, it’s the best gym in the world.

We are growing so fast that sometimes I feel the walls will cave to our power and to our intent on helping the world around us.

I’ve never worked in such a place of mutual support of health goals and personal triumph.

And when my chips were down a month ago, my CS family made sure to let me know I had their support.

So, I’ll create and regenerate on this gorgeous Caribbean island.

But I’ll do it missing my CS family.

I’ll be reminiscing about the Skype call with Joe and Jason that I made from this same balcony.

It was the call two years ago that set CS in motion – and changed my life forever.

You can whine about the family that isn’t near you.

Or you can create a family where you are, that does a beautiful job of nurturing and inspiring you.

As always, it’s your call.
