Professional Sadism

Dooley Noted: 11/8/2015

My patient came to me after seeing her dentist.

She was quite scared and wanted to know if what he said had merit.

He said the current state of her dentition would prevent her from “ever feeling normal.”

He told her she had zero chance of ever feeling good without getting massive work done.

The fear I saw in her eyes is not uncommon.

Some professionals have a sadistic quality to the way they deliver information and education.

In a way, I should thank them. Their lack of proper communication has shaped the way I communicate. I choose my words very carefully.

But not all patients are so lucky to have another professional’s counsel to explain the crystal ball theories of other sadistic professionals.

Do yourself a favor, and seek a second opinion.

I know it’s expensive. But this is your health. And health starts with a healthy mindset.

If you are constantly worrying about a sadistic professional’s improper communication, then you may be limiting your ability to heal yourself.

Additionally, you may feel pressure to accept their services with the power of expertise fueling their suggestions.

Please don’t forget that you – and you alone -are in charge of your body.

As always, it’s your call.
