Yesterday, I started a workout after having a great time teaching Immaculate Dissection.
I was lucky enough to have the assistants stay behind and pick apart my press groove.
But as we did, I started to feel paralysis by analysis.
The great Jonathan Fernandez, strongman extraordinaire, stepped in to ask some questions.
He asked me why I wanted to press the bell.
I told him it was a skill to work me toward the ultimate goal of being an Iron Maiden.
He asked why I wanted that goal.
I said I wanted to show women that an average woman of average size could do very powerful things. I wanted to show that strength is for everyone.
He pointed out that statement was what the goal did for everyone else.
And his point hit me like 24 kilo bell to the chest.
I had not fully committed myself to the goal.
He asked how often I trained.
I told him nearly 2 hours s day, 5 days a week.
He noted that will definitely get me stronger – but it may not get me much faster to my goal.
He asked if I did visualization work. He asked if I slept with the bell near my bed. He asked if I carried the bell around the house just to get used to its feel.
He asked if I hung from the pull-up bar with it around my waist, feeling its weight and picturing myself pulling up with it.
I had to admit I had done NONE of those things.
I had committed at 10%, rather than devoting like I did to other things in my life.
He noted my devotion to teaching – how it gets a huge percentage of my focus. I want that goal and consistently surpass that goal.
Iron Maiden feels far away because I put that goal there.
So, if you’re like me – consider how badly you want that goal.
You may find you don’t want it much – and that’s okay.
Or you may find some new strategies are employable to etch yourself closer to goal achievement.
But your time and commitment will be necessary.
As always, it’s your call.
